Looking to become a plumber?

At TAFE Queensland South West we offer pathways to help you become a qualified plumber. You can study a Certificate III and IV in Plumbing through a four year apprenticeship. We also deliver block training in a fully equipped workshop to develop your skills and build your confidence outside of your workplace.

Unique Student Identifier (USI) - Student Information

From 1 January 2015 if you are undertaking a nationally recognised program at TAFE Queensland you will need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Learn all about the USI and how to get your USI for your study.

Entry requirements

Students must be employed as an apprentice or trainee and have a signed Registered Training Contract, stating TAFE Queensland South West is the Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).

Resources required

  • steel-capped boots
  • protective clothing appropriate to the plumbing trade (a long sleeve cotton drill shirt and full-length cotton drill pants will be required in the welding workshops)
  • clear safety glasses
  • cap
  • personal stationery (pens and paper)

You will also require a valid email address, access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online systems, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at a number of TAFE Queensland locations.


Delivery of this program is available as a combination of workplace training and may include some delivery at TAFE. Where workplace training is selected, a Teacher will be assigned to attend your workplace to deliver training and assess your skills and knowledge. Delivery at TAFE consists of face-to-face classes after being released from the workplace by your employer. The duration of your attendance will vary depending on the stage and the units of competency specified in your individual training plan.

TAFE attendance times: Mondays from 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesday to Thursday 8am to 4.30pm, and Fridays from 8am to 2.30pm (please refer to training notices for minor variations to start and end times).

The qualification has core and elective unit of competency requirements that cover common and specialist skills for the plumbing industry in six specialist streams:

  • Stream 1 Water
  • Stream 2 Sanitary
  • Stream 3 Drainage
  • Stream 4 Mechanical services
  • Stream 5 Roofing
  • Stream 6 Gas services

Units of competency from a minimum of 4 of the following 6 plumbing streams are required for award of this qualification.

Stream 1 Water and Stream 2 Sanitary are mandatory.

The following units of competency are required for award of this qualification:

  • Stream 1 Water (mandatory): 24 core units and 5 elective units from the water stream


  • Stream 2 Sanitary (mandatory): 6 core units and 4 elective units from the sanitary stream.

Plus 2 of the following 4 streams:

  • Stream 3 Drainage: 9 core units and 3 elective units from the drainage stream
  • Stream 4 Mechanical services: 4 core units and 11 elective units from the mechanical services stream
  • Stream 5 Roofing: 8 core units and 4 elective units from the roofing stream
  • Stream 6 Gas services: 12 core units and 5 elective units from the gas services stream

NB: Units of competency achieved in 1 stream count as credit for the same unit in the core or elective requirements for any other stream.
