Entry requirements

While there are no formal entry requirements, it is recommended that you have sound literacy and numeracy skills.

Participants will require personal stationery (pen and paper).

Timetable

This short course is delivered either face-to-face, or via Videolinq over 5 full days in a 1 week block. Classes will generally run from 8:30am to 4:30pm, or over a negotiated equivalent time period (e.g. 9am to 5pm).

Alternatively, arrangements for corporate/commercial cohorts can be negotiated for delivery at a suitable time and location (whether that is at TAFE, in the workplace, or elsewhere). For commercial/corporate cohorts, it can be pre-negotiated for the program to run over 4 days and still meet the legislative requirements (provided this is suitable to both the client and TAFE Queensland South West).

Units

There are no formal units in this course. The aims of this course are to provide HSRs and deputy HSRs, elected under the new WHS legislation, with information and skills relating to:

  • overview of the WHS legislative framework
  • duties of various parties
  • key WHS terminology
  • the role of WHSQ and penalties for non‐compliance
  • requirements and mechanisms for consultation in the workplace on work health and safety issues
  • the role, entitlements and protections available for HSRs and Health and Safety Committees (HSCs)
  • resolving workplace health and safety issues through negotiation and conflict resolution
  • identifying hazards and ways in which they can be eliminated or minimised
  • incident notification and investigation
  • issuing Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and directing unsafe work to cease
