Students must be employed as an apprentice or trainee and have a signed Registered Training Contract, stating TAFE Queensland South West is the Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).

Delivered in workplaces throughout Queensland

Resources required

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) relevant to the workplace for practical activities (subject to on-site requirements)

This qualification is delivered in the workplace, either via a Traineeship pathway, or via commercial arrangements negotiated with employers. Training can occur in workplaces throughout Queensland, however, minimum student numbers do apply in some locations - please contact us to discuss training solutions for your organisation.

The nominal term for full-time trainees is 36 months (3 years). The training duration for those not entering via a traineeship pathway will be subject to the existing skill and experience levels of the learners. Delivery is generally conducted during standard work hours (1 full day) for the student in the workplace, on an approximate 6 week cycle. Details will be negotiated between TAFE Queensland and the employer.


Requirements for the completion of Stream 4 – Road Construction and Maintenance include:

Total number of units = 25

7 core units plus

18 elective units, of which:

  • 9 must be chosen from Group J
  • at least 2 must be chosen from Group K
  • at least 2 must be chosen from Group L
  • no more than 5 may come from elsewhere within this training package, or from another endorsed training package, or from an accredited course
  • at least  of the 18 elective units chosen must be road construction and maintenance (RIICRC) units

The elective units available may vary between locations, delivery modes and intakes.

Eligible apprentices and trainees who meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a student contribution fee of $1.60 per nominal hour. For more information on the number of units funded for this course visit Queensland Training Information Service (QTIS).

Nominal hours for each unit will be outlined in the agreed training plan, which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee, at the time of induction.

Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. The student and employer contribution fee will be outlined in the training plan and agreed to, prior to the commencement of training.

Existing workers in the Building and Construction Industry, or those returning to the industry, may be eligible for funding under the CSQ Skills Assessment and Gap Training (SAGT) program. For further information about this great funding opportunity, please visit the CSQ Website or contact us.
