Get started in the automotive technology industry

This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to inspect and service the underbody system components of light vehicles and heavy comercial vehicles needed within the automotive retail service and repair industry. You will cover checking and servicing steering,  suspension, bearings, seals, gaskets, wheels, batteries, braking, electrical systems as well fault finding and exhaust system repairs. Unique Student Identifier (USI) - Student Information

From 1 January 2015 if you are undertaking a nationally recognised program at TAFE Queensland you will need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Learn all about the USI and how to get your USI for your study.

Entry requirements

Students must be employed as an apprentice or trainee and have a signed Registered Training Contract, stating TAFE Queensland South West is the Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).

The nominal term for full-time trainees is 12 months. The duration for school-based and/or part-time trainees may be up to 2 years.

Delivery at TAFE consists of face-to-face classes after being released from the workplace by your employer and school (if applicable). The duration of your attendance will vary depending on the stage and the units of competency specified in your individual training plan. Trainees will generally attend 8 x 1 week blocks throughout the duration of their Traineeship.

TAFE attendance times: Mondays from 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesdays to Thursdays from 8am to 4.30pm, and Fridays from 8am to 2.30pm (please refer to training notices for minor variations to start and end times).


The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete 14 units in total, including 8 core units and 6 elective units.

If you are already employed as an apprentice or trainee, let your employer know that you want TAFE Queensland South West to be your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO), then contact an Australian Apprenticeships Centre to organise your training contract.
