Unique Student Identifier (USI) - Student Information

From 1 January 2015 if you are undertaking a nationally recognised program at TAFE Queensland you will need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Learn all about the USI and how to get your USI for your study.

Entry requirements

All students must have a Workplace Traineeship to undertake this study as a trainee. You will be required to participate in discussions with your TAFE teacher and workplace supervisor to ensure your work covers the scope of the competencies studied. This will then be formalised in a training plan agreement (including timeframes and required tasks.  A Training Record Book will be provided addressing:a list of required work activities, linked to your course competencies along with verification by your workplace supervisor.

As an existing trainee, it is expected that you would already hold a current Blue Card- Suitability to work with children and young people.


Delivered in workplaces throughout Queensland

Resources required

You will require access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online systems, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at a number of TAFE Queensland locations.

You will also require personal stationery (pen and paper), and a valid email address.


As a trainee, your study load will vary according to the training plan created in discussion with you, your workplace supervisor and your TAFE teacher at your induction.

Students are encouraged to create a weekly study timetable, aiming for 15-21 hours of study per week as well as your industry experience hours. Keep your communications channels open with your teacher, as this means assistance can be given early.


The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete 18 units in total, including 14 core units and 4 elective units. Your course will be delivered in a recommended study pattern, however this will be negotiated with your organisation and teacher at induction.

The elective units available may vary between locations, delivery modes and intakes.

Eligible apprentices and trainees who meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a student contribution fee of $1.60 per nominal hour. For more information on the number of units funded for this course visit Queensland Training Information Service (QTIS).

Nominal hours for each unit will be outlined in the agreed training plan, which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee, at the time of induction.

Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. The student and employer contribution fee will be outlined in the training plan and agreed to, prior to the commencement of training.

Existing workers in the Building and Construction Industry, or those returning to the industry, may be eligible for funding under the CSQ Skills Assessment and Gap Training (SAGT) program. For further information about this great funding opportunity, please visit the CSQ Website or contact us.
