Entry requirements

Students must be employed as an apprentice or trainee and have a signed Registered Training Contract, stating TAFE Queensland South West is the Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).

Resources required

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that includes:
    • sun-safe clothing such as long cotton drill pants and a long sleeved shirt
    • sunglasses
    • hat
    • suncscreen
    • steel capped boots
    • water bottle
  • personal stationery (pens and paper)
  • a valid email address

You will also require access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online systems, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at a number of TAFE Queensland locations.


The nominal term for full-time apprentices is 36 months (3 years). This duration may increase for school-based or part-time apprentices.

Delivery of this program is available as a combination of workplace training and delivery at TAFE. Delivery at TAFE consists of face-to-face classes after being released from the workplace by your employer. A simulated work environment is provided for the application of skills before returning to work. The duration of your attendance will vary depending on the stage and the units of competency specified in your individual training plan. Where workplace training is to occur, a Teacher will be assigned to attend your workplace to deliver training and assess your skills and knowledge.

Important Information

If you have industry current skills and experience, but not a formal qualification, you may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).


The successful achievement of this qualification requires you to complete 15 units in total, including 11 core units and 4 elective units. The elective units on your training plan will be selected in consultation with TAFE Queensland South West, your employer, yourself and, where appropriate, your school.

The elective units available may vary between locations, delivery modes and intakes.

Eligible apprentices and trainees who meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a student contribution fee of $1.60 per nominal hour. For more information on the number of units funded for this course visit Queensland Training Information Service (QTIS).

Nominal hours for each unit will be outlined in the agreed training plan, which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee, at the time of induction.

Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. The student and employer contribution fee will be outlined in the training plan and agreed to, prior to the commencement of training.
