Unique Student Identifier (USI) - Student Information

From 1 January 2015 if you are undertaking a nationally recognised program at TAFE Queensland you will need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). Learn all about the USI and how to get your USI for your study.

Entry requirements

Students must be employed as an apprentice or trainee and have a signed Registered Training Contract, stating TAFE Queensland South West is the Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).

Resources required

  • closed-in shoes (not canvas)
  • personal stationery (pens, pencils and notebook)
  • a valid email address

You will also require access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online systems, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at a number of TAFE Queensland locations.


The nominal term for full-time trainees is two (2) years (part-time options may be negotiated). Delivery of this program is a combination of workplace training and block delivery at TAFE.

Delivery at TAFE consists of practical assessment after being released from the workplace by your employer. Blocks are generally 2-4 days in duration and run from 9am to 5pm. Full-time trainees will generally attend 2 blocks during their traineeship. The duration of your attendance will vary depending on the stage and the units of competency specified in your individual training plan.


The achievement of this qualification requires you to successfully complete 15 units in total, including 10 core units and 5 elective units.

If you are already employed as an apprentice or trainee, let your employer know that you want TAFE Queensland South West to be your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO), then contact an Australian Apprenticeships Centre to organise your training contract.
